Can an artist be a diligent husband or should he remain faithful to the muse - creativity?
Maybe happiness is harmful to the poet's soul?
HOFFMANN is the founder of German Romanticism, he gets into love stories and suffers from unrequited feelings. But, love pain can be transformed into creativity.
The solution of the opera is the puppet world. The puppeteer is a MUSE, she guides HOFFMANN like a puppet, and introduces him through various fairy tales.
On the stage is the surface of an unknown, deserted planet, somewhere far away in the galaxy.
A crawling earth that moves all the time. There's some garbage in the air.
A little boy (HOFFMAN) barely moves around the stage. A SANDMAN appears, throws sand into the boy's eyes, he screams, goes blind. It's dark on the stage.
The light turns on. Already an adult HOFFMAN wanders, holding a candle in his hands. Some WEIRDOS and RATS appear around - the characters of his nightmares.
HOFFMAN is sucked into the ground, he loses consciousness.
The MUSE appears as NICKLAUSSE, Hoffman's best friend. She, seeing the poet's torment, turns on the light to STELLA - this is a huge and voluminous, lying "Rubens woman" (15 meters in length). HOFFMAN wakes up, goes to her - to the source of inspiration.
In the prologue, the characters drink wine in a bar -
We have wine pouring out of STELLA's chest. Bar guests
(RATS) rub the huge breasts of a woman, wine flows from them.
The opera's scenery consists of four women whom HOFFMANN loved: STELLA, OLYMPIA, GIULIETTA, ANTONIA.
HOFFMAN is looking for inspiration in every woman, and does not see that there is already a true muse in the guise of NIKLAUS next to him.
Every HOFFMANN love ends in disappointment.
OLYMPIA is a mechanical doll (8.5 meters).
She is HOFFMAN's first, childish, toy love.
GIULIETTA is an inflatable doll (8.5 meters).
She is HOFFMANN's sexy, lustful love.
For her sake, he is ready to lose himself.
The doll has an open mouth - this is the stage - there is a soloist standing there. There is a vagina through which you can enter and climb up to the head. You can jump on this doll like on a children's trampoline.
At the end of the act, the doll is blown away in front of the audience.
The last woman - ANTONIA - is an actress, the most conscious, adult love of the poet.
She is like a poet - an artist that chooses art of music instead of romantic love. ANTONIA is dying, but she does what she loves most - she sings.
She, like HOFFMAN, cannot sacrifice creativity to love. This doll is nature itself, with flowers and oceans (7-8 meters).
The epilogue. HOFFMAN is alone again.
The MUSE takes off NICKLAUSSE'S clothes and says that love and inspiration are not outside, but inside, in his solitude.
STELLA passes by.
HOFFMAN does not run after her, consciously remains alone with his MUSE. There is a deserted space on the stage. All the women disappeared. But, now it is not a desert, but a place where an artist can create any images. A place of play and children's fantasy. A little boy appears.
